Sage Intacct

Best-in-class cloud financials for services companies and nonprofits.

Services, nonprofits, SaaS finance

Overview

Sage Intacct is a finance-first cloud platform rather than a full operational ERP. It's built around deep multi-dimensional reporting and strong revenue recognition, which is why it's popular with professional services firms, SaaS companies, and nonprofits that need serious financial management without the manufacturing and supply chain weight of a full ERP.

Best for: Service companies, SaaS businesses, and nonprofits that need deep financial management without manufacturing complexity.

How it works

Sage Intacct is built around dimensions rather than an ever-expanding chart of accounts. Almost every strength people cite — reporting speed, multi-entity handling, project and fund accounting — follows from that one design decision.

Dimensions instead of account-code sprawl

Traditional charts of accounts encode department, location, and project into the account string, which is why they grow to thousands of codes. Intacct keeps a short natural account list and tags each transaction with dimensions: entity, department, location, project, customer, vendor, employee, item, and custom ones you define.

Reporting then slices by any combination of those dimensions without a report rebuild. The design work moves from account numbering to dimension definition, and it is worth spending real time on before go-live, because retrofitting dimension values onto historical transactions is painful.

Multi-entity structure and consolidation

Entities are first-class objects. Shared vendors, customers, and items can sit at the top level while transactions post at entity level, and users are granted access per entity. Intercompany transactions can be configured to post both sides automatically.

Consolidation runs as a process against the entity structure, handling currency translation and producing group statements alongside entity-level ones. For a services group with several legal entities and no inventory requirement, this is the platform's core value.

Project accounting and revenue recognition

For professional services and SaaS businesses, project accounting ties time, expenses, and billing to project dimensions, supporting fixed-fee, time-and-materials, and milestone billing patterns while keeping revenue and cost attributable to the same project.

Revenue recognition supports scheduled recognition independent of invoicing, which is what subscription businesses need to comply with modern revenue standards without maintaining a spreadsheet alongside the ledger.

The marketplace model, and what it implies

Intacct deliberately stays finance-first and relies on a marketplace for adjacent capability: payroll and HR, CRM integration, spend management, planning, and inventory-adjacent tools. The upside is best-of-breed choice; the downside is that each addition is another contract, integration, and support relationship.

Budget for that stack when comparing cost. A quote covering finance alone is not comparable to a suite price that includes inventory or spend management in the base platform.

Implementation timeline

  1. 1

Typically 3-6 months depending on entity count and modules.

  2. 2

Implementation cost runs roughly $1-$1.50 per $1 of annual subscription.

How it stacks up against Light

Sage Intacct is a strong, finance-focused choice if you don't need operational modules. Light covers the same finance-first, multi-entity ground, but adds native AP, expense management, and corporate cards in the same platform rather than as bolt-ons.
